Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State has reiterated its position to ban teachers and children from smuggling during school hours.
The council also vowed to henceforth arrest and jail any parents whose child or ward does not comply with the ban.
The Chairman of the Public School Supervision Committee (PSSC), Dr. Amadi Aroh said this on Friday at a meeting with education secretaries, head teachers and the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) in Ogbede.
Aroh warned that the committee would no longer tolerate teachers, who have the habit of using school hours for other matters, and asked such teachers to resign.
He blamed teachers, who were not committed to their duties, for the loss of confidence in public schools, saying the move encouraged parents to enroll their children and wards in private schools.
While noting that most private schools were substandard, the PSSC chairman pledged the committee’s determination to restore the lost glory and confidence of parents in public schools.
According to him, the interaction with the school principals and SBMC members was in line with the plans and vision of the LG chairman, Dr. Eric Odo in the field of education, which must be achieved.
He noted that the PSSC was not interested in witch-hunting any teacher or headteacher, adding however that it would not hesitate to impose sanctions on anyone who fails in his or her responsibilities.
In his remark, the Minister of Education, Igbo-Etiti LGA, said Johnson Nwaforpledged the cooperation of the four Secretaries of the Igbo-Etiti West, East, North and Central Education Authorities.
Nwafor noted that the move to reposition public schools in Igbo-Etiti would reduce the pressure faced by parents who paid exorbitant amounts in private schools.
He praised the choice of Dr. Aroh as chairman of the PSSC and described it as a square peg in a square hole.
A member of the SBMC, Okpara Memorial Primary School, Ikolo, Paul Agadaappealed to the committee to create a conducive environment for the learning activities in the area.
